What is Mindfulness and Why Should I Learn it?

Mindfulness is about paying attention to the present moment, on purpose and without judgement. Contrary to popular belief, Mindfulness meditation is actually not about emptying your mind of thoughts. Nor is it yet another task you have to do to be a better version of yourself.

It is the ability to observe your thoughts and feelings without being swept away by them or looking for ways to escape them.

It is the capacity to take skillful actions to problem-solve when needed, but without the toxic and non-skillful deluge of self-criticism and reproach that you're not doing enough, not good enough, not trying hard enough.

Mindfulness education is learning how to cultivate these skills. The 8 week curriculum is called MBSR - Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, developed by Jon Kabat Zinn at the University of Massachussetts school of Medicine. Research has shown this curriculum to deliver enormous positive outcomes to patients and doctors not only via how they relate to their stressors and their overall resilience, but also shocking improvements in symptoms of anxiety and depression, high blood pressure, chronic pain, as well as their ability to cope with and navigate severe illnesses like cancer.

My MBSR training/certification is through Brown University's School of Professional Studies and is formatted exactly as the original program designed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at UMass.

What will you gain? You will learn the foundational elements of a Mindfulness practice, which over time allow you to develop skills such as:

  • Greater awareness of stress patterns and how stress shows up in your thoughts, emotions, and body.

  • Being able to hit the pause button when you are feeling stressed. Learning to respond instead of react.

  • Experiencing emotions without becoming hijacked by them.

  • The ability to pay attention: how to regulate your attention and work with a wandering mind.

  • Deeper and more constructive awareness of your body including the physical sensations, tension, energy, and other signals the body sends that allows you address physical and emotional pain.

  • Greater mental and emotional clarity about issues when they arise.

  • Spending less time lost in mental replay or anticipation and more time engaging with what is actually happening in the present moment.

  • Practical tools for everyday life.
